Styling Tips with Wren

Personal style is not all about playing dress ups ... it's about finding clothes and styles that not only flatter your shape, but clothes that also suit your personality, lifestyle, and how you want the world to see you.

Looking and feeling your best is not a luxury...you have the right to be the best version of yourself!

Personal style comes from within. It’s when the woman, her individuality and spirit come through. She uses clothes to express who she is and how she feels.

Plan Ahead!

Let's face it...we are all time poor, so any little time saving tips to get us out the door on time each day I'm here for it! There are the meal preppers and the lunch box preppers...so how about us wardrobe preppers?! Lay your clothes out the evening before, including your accessories and shoes...or better still, purchase a small cheap clothes rack and outfit prep for the week ahead, hanging all your bits and pieces for each day along the rack. Trust me, it saves a lot of running around every morning trying to piece together an outfit, and scrambling through ironing baskets to find what you're looking for.

The Colour Story...

While I do believe there are certain colours and tones that suit each of us better than others, I wouldn't rule out a particular colour if you love it or want to wear it. We perceive particular colours in relation to the colours around it, so don't discard certain colours on face value – play with them against other colours, tones or accessories and see how they transform.

Some other points to consider when it comes to colour:

  • The colours we wear can change over time with changes in skin tone and hair colour;

  • As our personal style evolves, the way we view certain colours may also change;

  • As a society our style has become more relaxed and adventurous, which allows us to have more fun with colours and textures.

All colours are the friends of their neighbours and the lovers of the opposites.

You can belt that...

You heard it here first...a belt can be one of the hardest working items in your wardrobe. Gone are the days when a belt was just used to keep your pants up...a good belt worn well, can take an outfit from meh to WOW in an instant. With so many great belts on the market from stretch to structured, patterned to neutral, wide to thin, there's one to suit all shapes and sizes. A few tips:

  • Add a belt to define your curves under layers;

  • Pop a belt over a tunic or shirt dress to add shape;

  • If you are pulling together colours, a belt can be a good way to bring the whole outfit together;

  • Tuck part of your top into your pants, to reveal a great belt. Doing this will help to define your waist;

  • Play around with where you sit your belt...if you have a long torso, place your belt on the narrowest part of your waist, which is usually in the middle between your breasts and your hips...if you don't have a lot of room between your breasts and your mid section, then try a thinner belt just under the bust...this will help to lengthen out your body and elongate your waist area.

  • If you're wearing an oversized blazer or cardi, give it some definition by cinching it in with a belt over the top.

Accessories are your friends!

Accessories are a great way to add character to any outfit and can be an inexpensive way to 're-create' an outfit – simply by changing your jewellery, adding a scarf or a different pair of shoes, you can make the same outfit look very different to the last time you wore it.

Mirror, mirror

If you don't already own a full length mirror . . . get one stat! You would never try something on in a store without looking in the mirror, so the same should apply at home. It's not about vanity, it's not about being critical of yourself, and it shouldn't just be used when you're dressing for an occasion.

Your mirror is an essential tool to help you walk out the door looking and feeling good.

Some questions to ask when you're looking in your mirror:

  • Does my outfit suit where I'm going and what I'm doing today, including my accessories, my clothes and my shoes?;

  • Does this outfit flatter my shape and highlight the areas of my body I want to emphasise?;

  • Are there any parts of my outfit that just don't fit...too tight, too loose, too uncomfortable?;

  • Does the outfit reflect my personality, my lifestyle, and how I'd like to be seen by the world?;

  • And very simply...do I like what I'm wearing?

Invest in a pair of Hoops!

I love accessories...they can take an outfit from drab to fab in a second...and there is no better accessory than the humble hoop earring.

Big or small, thick or thin, plain or colourful, silver or gold, hoop earrings are timeless, feminine and powerful.

They instantly lift an outfit; help on a bad hair day when a pony tail is the only option to tame your mane; and they suit most faces, ages and necklines.
